2011 P United States Mint America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin: Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi
The Vicksburg campaign of 1862-1863 was one of the monumental campaigns of the American Civil War. Vicksburg was the Confederacy's stronghold on the Mississippi, fronted by swamps. The Union army and navy struggled to approach the fortified city through the difficult terrain. Finally a flotilla was run down the river past the fortress's guns at night, and the Union army crossed the Mississippi well below the city. From there U.S. Grant launched an almost Napoleonic lightning campaign slashing across country, driving the Confederate defenders in on the city and taking it under siege. The garrison surrendered on the 4th of July, 1863, just after the close of the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. With the surrender of Port Hudson down the river a few days later, the Confederacy was sundered, and President Lincoln was able to proclaim, "The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea."
This coin portrays the ironclad river gunboat U.S.S. Cairo, which was sunk with no hands lost in the Vicksburg campaign in December 1862.
This coin comes encapsulated and in the black branded display box, along with its certificate of authenticity. The box has minor wear. The coin has a little bit of toning on the rims and edge, and a scratch or mark by the mint mark that looks like it might have been from minting.

Diameter: 76.2 mm
