1914 Canadian Gold Reserve $10 PCGS Certified MS-64
In March 1912, the first completely Canadian Gold Coins, from raw material to design, were struck at the Ottawa Branch of the British Royal Mint (now the Royal Canadian Mint). These coins were authorized as under the Currency Act of 1910, as Canada sought to establish a stronger, more independent currency system aligned with the Gold Standard. 1914 was the final year that the Royal Canadian Mint produced $5 and $10 gold coins, as production was suspended due to World War I, and Canada left the Gold Standard in 1929. Interestingly, almost none of the 1914 $10 gold coins entered circulation. These coins were instead sealed in cloth bags and stored in the Bank of Canada vaults as part of the Canadian Gold Reserve, and sat untouched until the Bank of Canada started evaluating the gold reserves in the early 2000s. A portion of these coins were released for sale to the public in 2012 to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1912 issue.
