What is grading?
- Grading is evaluating the amount of wear on a coin or banknote and associating that to a "standard" grade point that has been set by the coin community and professional grading companies. There is a number system from 4-70 that is typically used in association with corresponding letters. (Example: G4, VG10, F12, VF20, EF40, AU50, MS60, MS63, MS65...) there many split grades between these standard grade points.
- It is always good to know that grading is subjective and is only an opinion of one person's observations. Using a trusted dealer and or third party grading service is always recommended when purchasing rare or high valued coins banknotes.
- Grading also involves looking for imperfections or problems beyond the natural wear, these are typically added on as a foot note. Example: Cleaned, Polished, Scratch, Whizzed, Mark, Dent, Corrosion, Tear, Graffiti, Stain, Holes, Pressed. All of these imperfections will reduce an items value by a degree depending on the severity of the problem. *Note, Toned coins occurs naturally in many cases and can be seen as a positive if choice toning is present*
