GOLD PLATED COINS ARE ON THE RISE AMONG COLLECTORS

Gold Plated Coins Are On The Rise Among Collectors

The Royal Canadian Mint releases many beautiful coins throughout the year and many collectors look forward to seeing the new designs and new innovative technology being used. Majority of coins released are pure silver but gold plated coins are currently receiving a lot of interest in the coin collecting market. What makes these coins different from so many other non-circulating legal tender coins is that each is actually a 0.999 fine silver coin with a thin layer of gold plating. The rise in interest is a reflection of how special the designs featured on these coins are.

What Makes Canadian Gold Plated Coins Special?

There are two major types of gold plated coins. The first are coins that have been completely plated with gold. This gives them an attractive finish without being as expensive to produce as pure gold. Additionally, they are often more robust.

The second type is silver dollar coins with partial gold plating. This is used to create attractive two-tone designs. Many coins featuring this style of plating help celebrate major anniversaries in the history of Canada.

Although plated coins are not a new invention, they have gained value recently. Many of them are matching the value of coins made from pure gold. This is largely because the plating is now reserved for special designs. So, they are almost always limited-run pieces or are otherwise exclusive. As quoted from the Numismatic News “ Canada is going one step further than most other nations by offering plated coins to collectors. The Canadian coins include the framed letter P below the obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to identify the coins’ true metal content.”

What Top Plated Coins Are Available Now?

At Colonial Acres Coins, we have a broad selection of silver dollar and gold plated coins. Some of these are proof coins from previous years that haven’t been circulated. However, many of them are commemorative coins that celebrate different aspects of Canadian culture, nature and history. The following are three incredible plated examples:

2008 400th Anniversary of Quebec City Gold Plated Proof Silver Dollar

2008 400th Anniversary of Quebec City Gold Plated Proof Silver Dollar

This coin features a gold plated design with an image of Samuel de Champlain landing on the St. Lawrence River shores. This event in 1608 was the founding of the city of Quebec. Champlain identified that the area was strategically positioned along with the river with a natural harbour, an ideal spot for a settlement.

The name Quebec is based on the Algonquin name for the area, “Kebek.” This means “where the river narrows.” It was already a popular trading and fishing spot for the locals. Over time, Quebec became one of the most important cities in North America and was a bustling maritime hub by the 1800s.

The obverse of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II. It is proof quality with reeded edges and a face value of one dollar.

2010 100th Anniversary of Navy Gold Plated Silver Dollar

2010 100th Anniversary of Navy Gold Plated Silver Dollar

The RCM released this coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian navy. Although 1910 was far removed from the beginning of naval activity in Canada, it was the first time that the nation established its own naval force separate from the U.K.’s Royal Navy.

On the reverse is a beautiful two-tone design featuring the HMCS Sackville, a legendary ship in Canadian naval history. It is the last surviving corvette and serves as a memorial to the Canadian navy. Like most other coins, the obverse features the Queen’s portrait.

2016 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable Silver Proof Set

2016 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable Silver Proof Set

This proof set of coins includes a gold-plated dollar coin featuring a design of the SS Great Eastern, a steamship that helped lay the transatlantic cable connecting Valentia Island in Ireland to Heart’s Content, Newfoundland. This meant that news could travel between Canadian and the British Isles at high speed, an incredible change compared to the previous two-week ship crossing that was necessary.

The full set also features gold plated two-dollar, one-dollar, 50-cent, 25-cent, 10-cent and five-cent coins. It makes a perfect collectible set.
