What's the Thracian Chersonesos Lion Coin?
The Thracian Chersonesos was a region located on what today is called the Gallipoli Peninsula. In ancient times, it was a wheat-producing area on one of the major trade routes between Asia and Europe, so many travellers came through its cities each year. The Chersonesos hemidrachm from 386-338 BC is one of the most commonly collected early coins. It features a lion that appears to have its head reversed. This coin is more common than most people realize, considering its age. It's a great starter coin for any ancient coin collection.

What's a Hemidrachm?
The Greek monetary system based its coins on the drachma. The obol was one-sixth unit of drachma. The hemidrachm was a coin denomination worth ½ drachm or 3 obols. The imagery on the coins often referred to myths of the community or local heroes. Many ancient citizens didn't read, but they could understand the images on the coins. The hemidrachm often featured a distinctive shield that symbolized the city where the coin was produced.

Roman coins are among the most popular ancient coins for collectors. They may feature emperors, empresses, military victories, gods, goddesses, monuments, and political messages from the Roman Republic and Roman Empire.
Collectors are often drawn to Roman coins because they connect directly to well-known historical figures and periods. Whether you are interested in Roman bronze coins, silver denarii, imperial portraits, or coins from a specific emperor, this category offers a rich starting point for building an ancient coin collection.

Antonius Felix
Felix served as Roman procurator of Judea under Emperor Claudius from AD 52 to 59 and is mentioned in Acts 24 for his dealings with the Apostle Paul. His rule was known for corruption, yet he escaped punishment largely due to his brother's influence in Rome. Minted during Felix's administration, this ancient coin features crossed ears of grain and offers a meaningful connection to Roman Judaea and Biblical history. Coins from this period are highly collectible for their historical significance and their ties to the political tensions of Roman rule in Judea.

Porcius Festus
Festus succeeded Felix as procurator of Judea and is mentioned in the Bible for sending the Apostle Paul to Rome to appeal before Nero. Though he served for only about two years, Festus issued a coin naming Nero Caesar, making his coinage especially significant to collectors of Roman Judea and Biblical history. Its rarity, brief historical window, and connection to Paul's journey make it a highly desirable ancient coin.

Ancient coin collecting reaches far beyond Greece and Rome. At Colonial Acres Coins, our selection may also include coins connected to Lydia, Egypt, early England, the Crusader States, Judaea, and other historic regions. These pieces give collectors a wider view of ancient and early medieval history, from the first forms of coinage to the crossroads of trade, religion, and empire.
One especially significant example is the Lydian Electrum Trite (Third-Stater). Struck in Sardes, the capital of Lydia, this electrum coin features the iconic lion's head design associated with some of the earliest known coinage. For collectors, it represents an extraordinary connection to the origins of money itself.
Collectors may also be drawn to Egyptian coins for their links to ancient dynasties and Mediterranean trade, early English coins for their connection to Anglo-Saxon and medieval history, and Crusader States coins for their blend of European, Byzantine, Islamic, and Holy Land influences.
Together, these coins show how ancient and early historic coinage can tell a much broader story than one civilization alone. Whether your interest is first coinage, Biblical history, medieval Europe, or ancient trade routes, this category offers many meaningful ways to build a collection.
