This coin is part of a series that celebrates the bison-the largest land animal in North America, a symbol of strength, and an important part of the history of the Prairies region of Canada.
This $200 coin is 99.99% pure gold, with a metal weight of 31.16 grams and a diameter of 30 millimetres. The reverse image by Canadian artist Claudio D'Angelo depicts a family grouping of three plains bison. The bull's side profile is seen as it stands in the background, an imposing figure amidst the grassy landscape on this early summer day. Next to it, a cow rests on its forelegs but keeps an ever-watchful eye on the calf. This young bison is inquisitively studying a black-billed magpie (seen in the foreground) as the black and white bird forages for insects along the dusty ground. Above this serene scene, the word "CANADA" and the face value "200 DOLLARS" are engraved, along with the date "2014" and the purity "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR" engraved on the ground below the magpie. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
