2022 Canada 25-cent The Bigger Picture: The Caribou 5oz Fine Silver (No Tax)
The third Bigger Picture re-imagines Emanuel Hahn’s famous caribou as one of many, and the setting may surprise you! Caribou are grazing animals and they’re often on the move, though some herds travel much farther than others. This expanded scene provides a privileged view of one herd’s movements within its range, where the 25-cent coin’s caribou is in the water and has nearly completed a river crossing.

The coin’s reverse combines Emanuel Hahn’s beloved 25-cent coin design with a new, expanded scene by Canadian artist Pierre Girard. Hahn’s caribou (inset) is one of several members of a travelling herd and is shown partially submerged during a river crossing. The obverse features a maple leaf pattern and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Caribou are the swimming champions of the deer (Cervidae) family. Their concave hooves help them paddle through the water, while their hollow hairs help with buoyancy. But they won’t necessarily “dive” right in; instead, the caribou may opt to find a safer spot to cross a raging river or wait for conditions to improve.
Canada is home to different subspecies, including the barren-ground (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus), woodland (Rangifer tarandus caribou), peary (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) caribou. All caribou may move around within their range but some herds of barren-ground caribou, like the Porcupine caribou herd, are the world’s top migrators: they can travel more than 2,400 kilometres over the course of a year, as they move from their winter range to the tundra calving grounds and back again.
