2021-D Virginia USA American Innovation Dollar Brilliant Uncirculated (MS-63)
The United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year (2018-2029) series honoring innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. The American Innovation $1 Coins are in uncirculated finishes and were minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. For 2021, the Virginia coin is the second coin minted in the Innovation Series for 2021
Being featured on this Virginia coin is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Open to motorists in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connects southeastern Virginia to the Delmarva Peninsula. This bridge-tunnel spans more than seventeen miles of open water and contains the following: twelve miles of low-level trestle, two mile-long tunnels, two miles of causeway and four man-made islands. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is recognized as an engineering marvel of the modern world.
The reverse design features a view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as a cross section cut away, illustrating the ingenuity involved in constructing it. Inscriptions read "United States of America" and "Virginia."
The obverse design illustrates a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions "In God We Trust" and "$1". The obverse also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation.
The edge-incused inscriptions include "2021," mint mark, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
