2021-D New York USA American Innovation Dollar Brilliant Uncirculated (MS-63)
The United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year (2018-2029) series honoring innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. The American Innovation $1 Coins are in uncirculated finishes and were minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. For 2021, the New York coin is the third coin minted in the Innovation Series for 2021.
Highlighted on this New York coin is the Erie Canal. This 363-mile, man-made waterway was completed in 1825. The Erie Canal connected Lake Erie in the West to the Hudson River in the East. The Erie Canal is revered as an engineering marvel considering it was constructed in 1825. This canal opened the opportunity for western interior for trade and settlement in addition to playing a critical role in the development of the State and Nation.
The reverse design features a packet boat being pulled from a city in the East towards the country areas to the West. Inscriptions read "United States of America" and "New York."
The obverse design illustrates a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions "In God We Trust" and "$1". The obverse also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation.
The edge-incused inscriptions include "2021," mint mark, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
