2021 $3 Floral Emblems of Canada - Nunavut: Purple Saxifrage Fine Silver (No Tax)
The Floral Emblems of Canada series from the Royal Canadian Mint is a 13-part, floral-themed celebration of Canada that forms a national bouquet within your collection. Styled like vintage silver jewellery, these colourful coins highlight the diverse beauty recognized by each province and territory in their selection of an official floral emblem, which speaks to the array of plant life in Canada.
The thirteenth and final issue in the Floral Emblem derives from the youngest of the Canadian Territories, Nunavut. This coin features the beautiful purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia) which is known as aupaluktunnguat in Inuktitut, one of Nunavut’s four official languages. The star-shaped saxifrage flower is one of Canada’s northernmost wildflower species. It’s also one of the first signs of spring in the Arctic, where its speedy return after a harsh winter is symbolic of the hardy, determined nature of the region’s inhabitants.
The reverse design by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan features a coloured portrait of the official floral emblem of Nunavut, the purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia), surrounded by a stylized floral pattern. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
