2021 Canada $50 First 100 Years of Confederation: Canada Takes Wing Fine Silver Coin (No Tax)

The third & final installment in the First 100 Years of Confederation Series highlights Canada's role during the post-war era (1945-1967) and our advancements not only in aviation but also as a country during this time! In the first 100 years of Confederation, the story of Canada was shaped by our efforts to bridge distances and come together — first by rail, then by sea, and finally, by air. It is the story that unfolds in the Royal Canadian Mint’s The First 100 Years of Confederation series, a three-part celebration of some of the mechanized history makers that helped shape a modern Canada.

It was the era that Canada had a nationwide sense of optimism due to its centennial year. With elements from pop art, the third coin in the three-part First 100 Years of Confederation series travels back in time for a glimpse of Canada between 1945 and 1967.

During these years, aviation technology, such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver bush plane, sent Canada to new heights and brought Canada as a nation closer together than before. As WWII ended, Canada's character as a nation had been solidified and our place worldwide had been secured. In the midst of Cold War Tensions, Canada's new-found sense of self emboldened us to champion peace and cooperation. It was a signal to the world that Canada had arrived. An outstanding end to the 100 Years of Confederation series that fuses art, history and industry.

Featured as the star on this coin is a symbol of Canada's high stature during 1945-1967: the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. Designed by Canadian artist Glen Green, the reverse is features Canada's famous bush plane rendered in a pop art style which was popular during the 1950s and 60s. The obverse combines five of the effigies that have appeared on Canadian coins since 1867 (clockwise, from top): the first effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, with the Latin inscription “ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA”; the effigy of King George VI by T. H. Paget, with the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D·G·REX”; the effigy of King George V by Sir E. B. Mackennal, with the inscription “GEORGIVS V D·G·REX ET IND: IMP:”; the effigy of King Edward VII by G. W. De Saulles, with the inscription “EDWARDVS VII D·G·REX IMP:”; and the effigy of Queen Victoria by L. C. Wyon, with the inscription “VICTORIA D·G·REGINA”.
