Description

2009 Canada $5 80th Anniversary of Canada in Japan Sterling Silver

Canada's first Japanese immigrant arrived in New Westminster (British Columbia) in 1877. As regular steamship service between Yokohama and Vancouver increased, the growing number of Japanese immigrants prompted Japan to establish a Consulate in Vancouver.

As relations continued to develop, Japan established its Ottawa Legation in 1928 while Canada opened its mission in Tokyo in 1929, the first diplomatic office in Asia! This year marks the 80th anniversary of Canada in Japan; with numerous events to be hosted by various diplomatic and trade offices on both sides of the Pacific - a wonderful anniversary year showcasing the diverse intermingling of Canadian-Japanese culture in an enduring friendship.
