Before ascending the Danish throne, he had briefly served as King of Norway in 1814, having been elected by the Norwegian assembly during Norway's attempt to remain independent following the Napoleonic Wars. Although his Norwegian reign lasted only a few months before Norway entered a union with Sweden, Christian VIII earned a lasting reputation there as a supporter of constitutional government. As King of Denmark, he showed a keen interest in science, archaeology, history, and the arts, helping to promote Danish cultural and intellectual life during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Politically, Christian VIII ruled during a period of growing liberal and nationalist movements throughout Europe. While he recognized the need for reform and introduced some administrative improvements, he remained cautious about abandoning the absolute monarchy that had governed Denmark since 1660. One of the greatest challenges of his reign was the increasingly contentious Schleswig-Holstein Question, concerning the future relationship between the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein and the Danish crown. Christian attempted to preserve the integrity of the Danish state while balancing competing Danish and German nationalist demands, but the issue remained unresolved at his death in January 1848. Just months later, the dispute contributed to the outbreak of the First Schleswig War and the end of Denmark's absolute monarchy under his successor, Frederick VII of Denmark.

Obverse: Portrait of Christian VIII facing right, with the legend around, and the date below.
Reverse: The greath shield with the Arms of Denmark and its territories within a crowned open ermine mantle, with the collar of the Order of the Elephant around the shield, a crossed sword and sceptre behind, and the denomination around.

Specifications:
Monarch: Christian VIII (1839-1848)
Engraver: Frederik Christopher Krohn
Composition: 0.875 Silver
Weight: 14.45 g
Diameter: 30.5 mm
Edge: Reeded
Die Axis: ↑↑
Mint: The Royal Danish Mint, Copenhagen, Denmark
https://www.colonialacres.com/products/wc-6754-denmark-1848fkvs-christian-viii-rigsbankdaler-30-schillings-vf30
