Although the centennial itself was in 1936, commemorative half dollars were struck beginning in 1934 and continued through 1938. Designed by Texas sculptor Pompeo Coppini, the obverse features a large eagle perched on an oak branch in front of the Lone Star, an unmistakable reference to Texas as the “Lone Star State.” The eagle, a traditional American symbol of strength and independence, combined with the Texas star creates a design that celebrates both the state’s identity and its place within the United States.

The reverse is one of the most elaborate designs in the entire classic U.S. commemorative series. At its center is a winged figure of Victory, kneeling with one hand resting on the Alamo, while holding an olive branch to symbolize peace. Behind her are the Six Flags of Texas, representing the nations and governments that have held sovereignty over Texas, and beneath her wings are portraits of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, two towering figures in the story of Texas independence. The inscription “REMEMBER THE ALAMO” serves as a powerful reminder of the 1836 battle and the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence. The 1935 issue is particularly interesting to collectors because it was struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, with approximately 10,000 examples produced at each mint, making the three-coin 1935 set considerably scarcer than the earlier 1934 issue.

Obverse: A large American eagle holding an oak branch in its talons, in front of a five-pointed star, with the legend around, and the date and denomination below.
Reverse: Winged and draped Victory holding an olive branch in her right hand, and resting her left hand on a representation of the Alamo; above her head is the word LIBERTE in front of six flags that designate the key periods of Texas' history, and she is flanked by two medallion portraits of General Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, with the legend around.

Specifications:
Engraver: Pompeo Coppini
Composition: 0.900 Silver
Weight: 12.5 g
Diameter: 30.6 mm
Edge: Reeded
Die Axis: ↑↓
Mint: The United States Mint of Philadelphia, United States
Mintage: 9,996
