The \"V\" has a clever two-fold meaning: both \"V\" for \"Victory\" and \"V,\" as in the Roman numeral for \"5.\" The coin was minted in tombac in 1943 -- a sort of low-cost brass -- and steel through the end of the war, since nickel, copper, and zinc were more necessary for the war effort.
