The only way out of the stalemate was forward. The chosen battlefield was the Somme, where a joint French and British assault would shove brutally into enemy defences until one side broke.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe result was an utter bloodbath. Britain lost 57,000 men -- the heaviest losses the British Army would ever suffer in a single day. The Newfoundland Regiment, fighting at the village of Beaumont-Hamel, suffered a casualty rate of 90% in just half an hour, slaughtered by German machine gun and artillery fire. After this first, bloody day, the Battle of the Somme would stretch for another four months, during which time more than 650,000 soldiers would be counted as killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner.
