He came to the throne at the age of 19, inheriting massive state debt and growing social problems. Though he tried to introduce reform policies, stabilize the economy, and weaken the rival British Empire by funding rebellion in the American colonies, he was indecisive and conservative at heart. He quickly became unpopular amongst every social class, and eventually, the compounding issues exploded into the French Revolution. Louis scrambled to regain control, but his trigger-happy responses and his general unwillingness to accept even small changes only fanned the flames. In 1791, Louis and his family, including his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, and his son, the Dauphin of France, were arrested. After being put on trial and found guilty of high treason, Louis was executed by guillotine on January 21, 1793.

The portrait on this 1782 sol is that of Louis XVI.
