Initially settled by the Bantu people in the 10th century, the area that would become Malawi had developed into several kingdoms by 1500. Unfortunately, contact with the Portuguese exposed the area to the Indian Ocean slave trade, which decimated the population. At its height, 20,000 people per year were being captured for transport to Kilwa and sold into slavery. In 1891, the British Empire swept in to proclaim the area the British Central Africa Protectorate, later known as Nyasaland, and it remained under British control until 1964, when it gained independence and was renamed Malawi.

These notes, printed in 1997, feature John Chilembwe, a Baptist pastor who was an early resistance fighter in the struggle against British colonial rule. In 1915, while Britain was distracted by the First World War, Chilembwe organized an armed uprising against British authority. He ultimately failed, but is still remembered as a hero who fought for independence.
