Led by Stephen Van Rensselaer, they botched the crossing so badly that it was believed to be a feint, which eventually allowed the Americans to surprise British forces at Queenston. When British General Isaac Brock realized what was happening, he rode hard from Fort George to Queenston Heights, where he regrouped the British forces and personally led the charge against the invaders. He was shot down, struck just above the heart by a sniper, but it was enough to allow the British forces and their First Nations allies to clobber the Americans into submission. More than 300 invaders were killed or wounded, and nearly 1000 were taken prisoner. By contrast, the British lost only 28 men.

For his heroism, Brock is remembered by Canadians today as a hero of the War of 1812. This medal was originally part of a set of two, with the second featuring Tecumseh and the Battle of the Thames. It was produced sometime around 1964.
