Motivated purely by jealousy and paranoia, the junior Constantines -- Constantine, Constantius, and Constans -- had whittled their family tree down to a stump by massacring most of their male relatives. Julian was most likely spared only because of his youth. When the brothers inevitably cannibalized each other, leaving just Constantius standing, Julian finally had the opportunity to exact some much-deserved revenge. His army proclaimed him emperor in 360, and he wheeled on Constantius, who was distracted in the east. The two would never meet on the field of battle, however, as Constantius got sick and died on the march. Some claimed that, on his deathbed, he conveniently named Julian his heir.

Julian didn't last long, and he is mainly remembered for his attempts at religious reforms. In a period when everyone was moving away from the traditional Roman beliefs towards Christianity, Julian went the other way. He had been raised in the Church, knew the Bible cover to cover, and had worked for a time as a lector, but, around the age of twenty, he left to pursue a pagan faith. He tried to reinstate traditional polytheism, restore temples and hobble the growing power of the Christian bishops -- but he died on campaign in Persia before he could accomplish anything meaningful. For his efforts, history remembers him as Julian the Apostate.

The story of the Constantinians is one made for prestige TV, stuffed with high drama, twisty betrayals, and violent revenge. Own a part of it by bringing home this bronze coin featuring the bust of Julian the Apostate -- Rome's final pagan emperor and the last of the Constantinians.
