Within five years, constrol of the island had shifted from the Dutch-controlled state of Johor to the British Empire, which folded it first into the Straits Settlements, and then into British India. Singapore remained a British naval base and trading centre until 1963 -- with the brief but important exception of its seizure by Japan during the devastating 1942 Battle of Singapore -- when it separated from Britain to join the Federation of Malaysia. A period of intense political and racial strife followed, culminating in Singapore's ejection from Malaysia. Suddenly, in 1965, Singapore became a newly independent country.

Starting in 1975, Singapore began issuing 50% silver coins celebrating the 10th anniversary of its independence. Most of these celebrate the country's technological and economic progress, with this one featuring communication satellites on the reverse. The obverse displays SIngapore's coat of arms. The coin comes encapsulated in a wooden case with COA.

Please note, there is some light, but not terribly noticable wear on both the case and capsule.
