julw2-kb1963
Great Britain 1977 Silver Jubilee Stonehenge Commemorative Medallion in Case (light wear)
Great Britain 1977 Silver Jubilee Stonehenge Commemorative Medallion in Case (light wear)

1977 marked Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee -- that is, 25 years since her accession. Many commemorative coins were minted, including this one, which features the famed English heritage site Stonehenge.

The megalithic structure we generally think of as Stonehenge was erected around 2500 BCE, but construction at the site was actually conducted in phases over 1500 years, between 3100 and 1600 BCE. It consists of a series of rings of large stones, some of them capped with lintels, contained within a large, circular ditch. The precise nature of the site is unknown, but it was presumably of religious or ritual significance. Burials associated with the site predate construction, suggesting the spot itself was significant to prehistoric populations long before any stones went up -- but what it actually is remains a mystery. It seems to align with astronomical phenomena, suggesting that, perhaps, it was used in part to observe the sky. The high number of burials -- some containing people who came from quite far away -- suggests it was a pilgrimage site. The burials lead some to believe it was a place of healing, like a prehistoric Lourdes, and others to believe it was a funerary monument, a prehistoric necropolis where people could lay their loved ones to rest and worship the spirits of their ancestors. Some simply think it was a gathering place for nomadic groups, who were, in the Stone Age and early Bronze Age, beginning to unify into larger and more distinct cultures. Of course, all of these things can be true, and, indeed, the site was in use for so long that it could be any combination of these things to different groups at different times. What is clear is that it was culturally and spiritually significant to a lot of people for a very long time, and, indeed, it remains so today.

Please note, there is some light wear and yellowing on the case and the coin exhibits some scuffs and smears.
