The plan was that Maria (age 7) would marry her uncle, Miguel (age 24), and that Miguel would rule as regent for his child bride. Instead, he just took over -- sparking a series of civil wars that culminated in Miguel's abdication and Maria's restoration in 1834. The queen's return coincided with her first-ever trip to Portugal.
