Great Britain 1669 Norfolk Farthing Token VG-F (VG8) DOD
Towards the middle of the seventeenth century, Norfolk -- in particular the larger towns of Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn -- was experiencing a currency shortage. This was because of the Civil War, which had ended with the beheading of Charles I and the rise of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. As has been the case throughout history, the population took it upon itself to solve the problem with privately issued tokens. When the monarchy was restored in 1660, Norfolk had been struggling with a coin shortage for almost twenty years. It would not be entirely resolved until 1672, when the first Charles II farthings and halfpennies were issued.
