Citizens enjoyed liberal civil rights for the period, with democratic parliamentary elections and guaranteed freedom of speech; their flourishing economy, however, relied on a system of slavery that was rapidly becoming outlawed throughout the rest of the world. Pedro II (given the fantastic epithet \u003ci\u003eO Magnânimo\u003c\/i\u003e or \"The Magnanimous\") ruled for most of the empire's history, from 1831 until his deposition in the military coup of 1889. It was he who guided Brazil through the transition from a fragile, freshly independent state to an established international power, and through the wars and civil disputes that rocked post-colonial South America. He enabled the abolition of slavery, which eventually came in 1888, and was, by all accounts, an enlightened patron of the arts, sciences, and culture.
