Passengers and crew alike formed a bucket brigade, but it was no use. At 8:00 on the evening of September 12, the ship sank. 425 lives were lost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1988, the Columbus-America Discovery Group of Ohio, piloting a remotely operated vehicle, found the wreck and recovered approximately $100 million worth of gold -- including one ingot that weighed eight pounds.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis commemorative silver coin remembers the \u003ci\u003eCentral America\u003c\/i\u003e with a detailed reverse image of the ship caught in the storm. On the obverse, a California prospector pulls a large, genuine placer gold nugget out of a river.
