They saw the rise of the Roman Empire, and were, for many years, the only entity capable of matching them toe-to-toe. When Rome fell, they became the rivals of their successors, the Byzantines. The Muslim conquest of the 7th century changed the majority religion, but Iran rolled on to become one of the bastions of the Islamic Golden Age. Iran carried on as a world power until the tail end of the 18th century, when a weak ruling dynasty failed to deflect the emerging threat of the Russian Empire to the north. Russia picked away at Iran, culminating in an occupation during World War II that brought famine, political chaos, and total economic collapse. Now vulnerable to Western interests who valued its natural resources, Iran struggled through a series of coups, invasions, and proxy wars that have led it into the present day. Today, it is run by an authoritarian Islamic theocracy widely criticized for its poor human rights record, treatment of women and minorities, and suppression of dissent. Nevertheless, Iran remains a key player in world history, and a major influence in the development of art, culture, and technology throughout the Near East and beyond.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis lot of 100 rials notes dates to the modern Islamic Republic.
