Kenilworth Castle, located in Warwickshire, England, is renowned for its Tudor period gardens, which were planted as part of a lavish welcome for Queen Elizabeth I and are maintained today in the same style. As for the castle itself, it began as a Norman tower in the wake of the conquest of 1066, and began expanding into a proper castle in the 1120s. It was then added to by King John in the early 13th century, and expanded into a beautiful example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture by the late 14th century. The last expansion came in the 16th century, when the gardens and several Tudor-style buildings were added. The castle was deliberately ruined (a process called "slighting") during the English Civil War, but what stands today provides fascinating insight into the development of English architecture throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

This souvenir medallion features Kenilworth's striking facade on one side, and a portrait of Elizabeth I on the other. Please note, some scratches and scuffs are present from handling.
