It comprised sixty gilt-coated sterling silver medallions, each depicting an important moment in South African history. This one depicts the Kimberley Mine.

In 1871, diamonds were found on a farm belonging to Finnish immigrants Diederik and Johannes de Beer. Chaos ensued; more than 50,000 miners flocked to the area and started clawing at the ground with nothing but shovels and picks. Their efforts yielded more than 2,700 kilograms (about 13,600,000 carats!) of diamonds, and launched the De Beers diamond empire. They also produced the world's largest hand-dug hole. At over 460 metres wide and 240 metres deep (though now mostly filled with water), Kimberley Mine is now officially -- and affectionately -- called "The Big Hole." Since the early 2000s, efforts to register the Big Hole as a World Heritage Site have been underway.

Please note, this item exhibits some scuffs and smudges from handling.
