apw2-kb1221
2024 Solomon Islands $10 7 Wonders: Hanging Gardens of Babylon 100g Silver (No Tax)
2024 Solomon Islands 7 Wonders of the Ancient World: Hanging Gardens of Babylon 100g Silver Coin (No Tax)

Originally compiled in the 3rd century BCE by Philo of Byzantium, the Seven Wonders were meant to be themata ("things that must be seen") for Greek travellers -- in other words: they were a bucket list for ancient tourists. Refined by a host of ancient writers, including Strabo, Diodorus Siculus, Herodotus, Callimachus of Cyrene, and medieval historian Bede, the standard list is this: the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt. Of these, only the Great Pyramid is still standing. The concept of the "Seven Wonders," however, lives on in a plethora of "Top 7 Must-See" lists that cover everything from the Wonders of the Natural World to the Wonders of Engineering, to the Wonders of Space, to the Wonders of just about every individual country, province, state, or city you can think of!

Beginning in 2024, German company MDM began producing the beautiful "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" series. Honouring each of the original Seven Wonders, these breathtaking coins feature artists' interpretations in stunning high relief. Crafted from 100g of 99.9% pure silver, they come presented in a beautiful wooden case with COA and an informational pamphlet. An extremely limited mintage, only 799 of each coin exists in the world.

The 2024 coin, first of the series, pays tribute to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Built by the greatest king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, Nebuchadnezzar II, sometime between 605 and 562 BCE, the gardens were described as a breathtaking series of vast, sloping terraces overflowing with flowers, trees, and fountains that pumped water from the Euphrates River. Legend has it that Nebuchadnezzar had them built out of love for his wife, Amytis, who yearned for the lush, forested mountains of her home in Media. A sprawling, manmade oasis in the middle of a desert (Babylon was about 80 km from modern Baghdad, Iraq), few places made the ancient imagination run wild like the Hanging Gardens. To this day, however, no archaeological evidence of the Gardens has ever been found.
