Inspired by the creation of American writer, H.P. Lovecraft, this 2021 coin features the fictional character, Cthulhu from Lovecraft's original short story "The Call of Cthulhu" in 1928. H.P Lovecraft himself described Cthulhu as, “a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind”.
In Lovecraft's story, Cthulhu existed as a ruler of Earth, a high priest of the Great Old Ones before humans came to be. Cthulhu lived in the sunken city of R'lyeh sleeping and is said to have influenced the first humans through his dreams, to create the cult of Cthulhu. The chant of this cult can be viewed on this coin only through a looking glass.
