In 1794, production resumed using the "Flowing Hair" design, and the "s" in disme was dropped, as many had trouble pronouncing the word disme ("deem"), and the half disme became the half dime. These coins were originally made of silver, but in the 1860s, the composition switched to a copper-nickel alloy. As the introduction of this new alloyed coin made the silver coins redundant, the half dime was discontinued in favour of the coin we now know as the nickel.

Obverse: The portrait of third president of the United States Thomas Jefferson, facing left, with the date to the right and legend around.
Reverse: Artist's representation of Monticello, Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, Virginia, with the denomination below, and the legend around.

Specifications:
Engraver: Felix Schlag
Composition: Copper-nickel
Weight: 5 g
Diameter: 21.2 mm
Edge: Plain
Die Axis: ↑↓
Mint: United States Mint of Denver, USA
Mintage: 30,638,000

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0679/1744/7457/files/nophoto_785eb0ac-ffaf-4f67-a0b6-db4fee5b3e0c.gif?v=1719346311
