Cronstedt in 1751. The three Canadian commemorative coins issued up to that time had been silver dollars, but the 5-cent piece was selected for use in 1951 because it was the only denomination struck in nickel. The design was chosen from entries submitted to the Mint in an open compeition, the first time in Canada where this was done for coinage that was actually issued. The winning design depicts a nickel refinery, with low buildings flanking a smoke stack in the centre.

Half Moon: Beneath the 1 in "1951", what appears to be a half moon can be seen. This is due to a clashed die.

Specifications:
Monarch: George VI
Designer and Engraver: Obverse: T.H.
