Description

2011 $350 Pure Gold Coin - Mountain Avens (TAX Exempt)

Delicate Strength, Resilient Beauty

Named for the Greek oak-nymph, Dryas, this fascinating genus features short woody stems and evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves that closely resemble those of oak trees. They are one of the first flowers one sees following the last of winter's snows. Like miniature sunflowers, the cupped blooms turn on their stems, following the path of the sun across the sky and offering a warm, welcome retreat for the many insects so crucial to pollination.

The flower's strength and delicate beauty resonate strongly with denizens of northern climes: the hardy Dryas integrifolia is the Territorial Flower of the Northwest Territories, while Dryas octopetala is the National Flower of Iceland.

One rare species of Dryas, found in only three places on Earth, is particularly meaningful to Canada. Approximately 3,200 yellow Eastern mountain avens, Dryas drummondii, grace the bogs of Brier Island and East Ferry, Nova Scotia, from June to September. The only other place this species is found is along the streams and in the wet mountain meadows of New Hampshire, USA. Although resilient, it is nevertheless vulnerable, its survival endangered by habitat loss, climate change, and warming ocean temperatures.
