Prutah is a Hebrew term, possible derived from Aramaic, referring to a small denomination coin. The prutah was an ancient copper coin of the Second Temple period (approximately 516 BCE to 70 AD) of Israel with low value. In ancient times, a loaf of bread was worth about 10 prutot (plural of prutah). One prutah was also worth two lepta, which was the smallest denomination minted by the kings of the Hasmonean and Herodian dynasties.
