Description

Great Britain 1603-4 James I Shilling Fine (F-12)

James became King of Scotland as James VI as a one year old infant after the forced abdication of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots on July 24, 1567. After the death of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, on March 24, 1603, he became James I, King of England and Ireland after the death of his childless cousin, Elizabeth I. James the VI and I's reign marked the beginning of the House of Stuart, which reigned from 1603 to 1714.

The reign of James VI and I saw the translation of the Christian Bible from Latin into English, which was later named after him, as well as the continuation of the "Golden Age" of Elizabethian literature and drama. James also was extremely concerned with the threat posed by witches, and thus wrote Daemonologie in 1597 which opposed the practice of witchcraft (which, incidentally, provided the backdrop for William Shakespeare's Macbeth).
