Being featured on this Connecticut coin is Gerber Variable Scale. Inventor Heinz Joseph Gerber designed a scale that could flow with a curve, expand, contract and turn a corner while attending college. Many consider this scale to be the most revolutionary engineering tool since the slide rule. During the 1950's, the variable scale was the most widely used tool for engineers and architects worldwide. Despite other technological advancements like the calculator or computer with the ability to replicate it's results, the Gerber Variable Scale was integral to the scientific advancement of the 20th century.
The reverse design features the Gerber Variable Scale being used to increase a geometric shape resembling the State of Connecticut by 200%. Inscriptions read "United States of America," "Gerber Variable Scale," and "Connecticut."
The obverse design illustrates a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions "In God We Trust" and "$1". The obverse also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation.
