Coin Supplies
To properly store and display your coin collection, both novice and advanced
coin collectors need several coin supplies. Keeping your coins from damage and in pristine condition is the most important thing and supplies help you do just that. Here are some of the most basic coin supplies you’d be wise to purchase.
Soft Pad/Cloth
Hard surfaces can severely damage expensive coins if they’re dropped. A pad or soft cloth that’s kept under your working area is the best way to guard against drops. It’s also a great safety measure against the coins being dropped and then rolling away to the floor where they may sustain further damage.
Light & Magnifier
To help you see your coins better, buy a magnifier and lamp. Incandescent lighting is the best as fluorescent lighting may be too mild and soft. On the other hand, lights that may be too harsh include halogen lights; these call undue attention to minor blemishes on coins. A 75 watt incandescent bulb in a simple desk lamp is the best choice.
Gloves
The sensitive surface of any coin can be damaged by the oils and acids from your skin. Coins with pristine surfaces like uncirculated pieces are especially vulnerable. Gloves should be worn in order to keep the oils and acids on your skin from contaminating the coins. Most professional numismatists prefer soft
cotton gloves. Gloves that can be purchased at any drug store, such as nitrile or powder-free latex gloves, are also good alternatives.
Flat Clinch Stapler
You will need to staple your coin holders shut if you’re using 2x2 cardboard coin holders. A simple and easy way to do this without risking the value of your coins is to use a flat clinch stapler. It presses the staple under the holder into the cardboard so that the staple does not protrude from the back.
Coin Holders
In order for your coins not to get damaged, the first and most important supply you need is a coin holder. As a means to store their coin collection, most beginners start with the proverbial “cigar box.” But when the coins touch and rub one another, they still might damage each other and this method doesn’t offer protection against that. So, it’s best if you have a holder that is specifically designed to hold your coins, such as a coin flip or
cardboard 2x2.
Coin Folders and Albums
A coin folder or album is another method of storing your coin collection. You can choose from many options. Ideal for beginner coin collectors are coin folders, but they only allow one side of the coin to be viewed. On the other hand, coin albums are best for intermediate and advanced collectors as they allow both sides of the coin to be viewed, but they come at a greater price.
