2012 Canada Wolf Cubs Special Edition Specimen Set
In Canada, the wolf has made a comeback, occupying about 90 percent of its historic range from the dense coastal forests of British Columbia to the barren Arctic plains and the boreal woodlands of Labrador. Though born tiny, deaf, and blind, this amazing apex predator grows to become one of the most adaptable, socially complex, and eminently fascinating residents of the Canadian wilderness. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to present the 2012 Special Edition $2 Specimen Set of Canadian coins. The finish on these superb coins combines brilliant and frosted relief over a lined background. A finish type that is unique to the Royal Canadian Mint.
The $2 coin, only offered in this set, features two young wolf pups playing amid the fresh grasses and first daffodils in a high springtime meadow. One pup raises its tiny muzzle in a prototypical howl - practicing, no doubt, for adulthood when this skill will have many uses. Its sibling gazes playfully at the howling pup, ears forward, front legs slightly bent, tail low, in a pre-pounce play stance. In the background, a winding river twists through a broad forest valley that is flanked on all sides by a vast coniferous forest.
