2013 Canada $5 Tradition of Hunting - Bison Fine Silver (No Tax)

In pursuit of the great bison.

New Tradition of Hunting series featuring the bison, as seen through the eyes of First Nation's artists. This coin is 99.99% pure silver, with a diameter of 36 mm and a metal weight of 23 grams.

The reverse design by Coast Salish First Nation's artist Darlene Gait features a captivating narrative of two young boys surveying a bison herd prior to their first hunt while their father points to the miraculous White Buffalo. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

"Stay low! You don't want them to see you." The bison continue grazing despite the boys' excitement. The herd is RIGHT there! Eyes strain for a closer look; fingers yearn to touch the great beasts that offer themselves in sacrifice so the villagers can have food, clothing, tools and shelter.
This is the moment the boys have been waiting for. They have listened to their father's wisdom, his spellbinding stories about the hunt; learned to watch nature for signs that the bison are ready. For young minds, the hours spent making arrows felt more like years-an exercise designed to instill patience and discipline; the understanding that it takes a carefully crafted arrow, a focused mind and eye to hit the mark.

Now, with their bellies pressed against the ground, the boys' eyes follow their father's finger, scanning the herd, finally settling on the White Buffalo; revered hero from the legends that echo in the boys' hearts and minds. A white bison, bison being the correct term for this species, is so rare, its birth is deemed a miracle; a harbinger of important change that brings with it the promise of hope and spiritual healing for Mother Earth. The White Buffalo is a sacred symbol of unity among all the people of the earth, and, as such, is spared from the hunt.

The hunting party gathers. Anticipation builds. Soon, the boys will join the tradition that has sustained their people for thousands of years. It is time to hunt and honour the great bison.
