2009 Canada $15 Vignettes of Royalty Series - Queen Elizabeth II (#5)

The art form once reserved for wealthy aristocrats can now be enjoyed with this remarkable coin series featuring the effigies of five monarchs that have appeared on Canada's circulation coins. Each effigy is struck in ultra high relief reminiscent of ancient medallic art.

Canada did not always produce its coins domestically. Until the Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908, Canadian coins were imported from overseas. Even then, the designs and tools remained the domain of the Royal Mint in London while the Canadian facility operated as its Ottawa branch. This began to change in 1930 when the Mint became a wholly owned Canadian institution.

Elizabeth II was crowned at the dawn of the television age and the splendour of the ceremony reached hundreds of thousands of people in a way never before possible. Similarly, modern air transportation enabled her to take on an unprecedented programme of visits throughout the Commonwealth, including Canada, which has welcomed her, together with The Duke of Edinburgh, some 30 times.

In 1965, Elizabeth II proclaimed Canada's National Flag with its maple leaf design. She was also present for two other historic Canadian milestones - The centennial celebrations (1967) and the repatriation of the constitution (1982). She is the first monarch to use the title" Queen of Canada" to reflect Canada's status as a fully independent realm within the Commonwealth. This uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on Canada's 1-, 5-, 10-, 25- and 50-cent and one-dollar coins from 1953 to 1964.
