The Grizzly Bear, Ursus arctos horribilis, is the fourth animal to feature in our Kings of the Continents collection, which portrays some of the most dominant and revered animals from around the globe.

A North Americas subspecies of the brown bear, the Grizzly Bear is named after its fur colour. This awe-inspiring giant stands as tall as 2.5 m (8 ft) and weighs up to 360 kg (800 lbs).

These highly intelligent predators sit at the top of the food chain and are known to have an excellent sense of smell.

Once, Grizzly Bears inhabited the entire west of North America and the Great Plains. Today they can be found in the wilds of Canada and Alaska and only about 1,000 remain wild in the continental U.S., where they are protected by law.

Every year, dozens of Grizzly Bears congregate by some of Alaska's remote rivers, as the salmon run upstream for summer spawning. They feast on the fish and collect necessary fats to last the long winter hibernation ahead.

Interesting Fact:
Despite their size, Grizzly Bears are fast runners, known to reach speeds as high as 50 km/h (35 mph) over land.
