The samurai (or bushi), were warriors and members of a powerful military caste in feudal Japan. They rose to power in the 12th century and eventually became the highest ranking social caste in Japan. The samurai would dominate Japanese government and society until the abolition of the feudal system in 1868.
Samurai were known for their incredible sword skills. The traditional samurai code of honour, discipline and morality known as bushido-or "the way of the warrior"- is still today the base for the basic code of conduct for much of Japanese society.
