Description

2009 Canada 50-Cent Six String Nation Guitar Triangle Coin

Imagine when that lyrical message comes from a guitar crafted of historic wood, rock and bone from across the country. The Six String Nation Guitar is just such an instrument. It contains 64 pieces of true Canadiana - legendary treasures like a piece of Bluenose II's deck, gold from Maurice Richard's Stanley Cup ring and one of the oldest rocks on the planet from Great Bear Lake. Celebrate Canada - its amazing history, cultures and stories - with the Six String Nation Guitar.

The Six String Nation Guitar is the brainchild of broadcaster Jowi Taylor. In 1995, he conceived the idea of creating a symbol of national unity by pulling together stories from across Canada, a concept that began to materialize as a guitar during a chance meeting with luthier George Rizsanyi.

For the next 10 years, Taylor researched, gathered materials and built support for the project and in April 2006, the task of making the guitar began. It took Rizsanyi six weeks and the guitar made its debut on Parliament Hill where it was played by numerous musicians including Stephen Fearing, Colin James, Michel Pagliaro, Aselin Debison and Amy Millan during Canada Day celebrations.

Since then, the Six String Nation Guitar has travelled to festivals, conferences, schools, concerts and community events across Canada, passing through the hands of some of the nation's most beloved musicians along the way. It has also been held by many regular Canadians in a series of portraits numbering in the tens of thousands.

Aptly nicknamed Voyageur, the guitar spans the many cultures, communities and characters that exist throughout Canada. To study its components is to lift Canada's stories - large and small - off the pages of history books. To play it or listen to its lyrical sound is to embrace and honour the diversity that is Canada - as represented in each piece of wood, bone, metal and stone.
