Description

1948 Canada Dollar ICCS Certified AU-55

Since 1937, when King George VI began appearing on Canadian currency, the obverse of Canadian Silver Dollars bore the inscription "GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP", which is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase "George VI Dei Gratia Rex et Indiae Imperator" or "George VI By the Grace of God King and Emperor of India". On August 15, 1947, India became a fully independent nation, which meant that the legend on all denominations of Canadian decimal currency had to be updated. But, by 1948, the new dies reflecting India's independence had not yet been prepared, so production of the 1947 coinage continued into 1948 with a maple leaf engraved next to the 7 to distinguish it from the actual 1947 coinage.

Production of the actual 1948 Dollar began mid-1948 with the new obverse inscription "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX", but the delay impacted the amount of dollars that were produced, making the amount minted 18,780.

The low mintage makes the 1948 dollar a favourite among collectors.
