Description

PE-8A (1858) Fisheries & Agriculture Halfpenny Token ICCS Certified VF-30

The last token of Prince Edward Island was issued about 1858. It is the heaviest of the local tokens which suggests that it represented another attempt by a merchant to circulate cents. It was probably issued by James Duncan as the obverse is similar to that of Duncan's tokens of 1855. It seems that after 1858 Prince Edward Island was amply supplied with copper for there were no further halfpenny issues. The official adoption of the decimal system in 1871 rendered the tokens obsolete and they were replaced by the cents of 1871.
