The 2020 Silver Kookaburra commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the Silver Kookaburra. The Australian Silver Kookaburra series from the Perth Mint began in 1990 and is the longest-running bullion program from the mint.

To commemorate the 30th Anniversary, the reverse depicts a kookaburra perched on a roof at dawn with stylized rays of light. Additionally, the inscription, "Australian Kookaburra 30th Anniversary" is included with the Perth Mint's "P" mintmark. The obverse also has a new look, which features Stuart Devlin's representation of a Kookburra on a tree stump surrounded by native foilage as it first appeared on the 1990 Australian Silver Kookaburra. Additionally, Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscription '1990 2020' are featured on the obverse.

The laughing Kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher species, and a bird synonymous with the Australian bush. This bird species is indigenous to Australia and is known for their call, which is said to sound like echoing human laughter.
