Description

1947 Maple Leaf Canada 5-cents Very Fine (VF-20)

The granting of independence to India created a dillemma for the Royal Canadian Mint in the early months of 1948. The new obverse coinage tools with "ET IND: IMP" omitted would not arrive for several months, yet there was a great need for all denominations of coins. Therefore, the Mint struck coins dated 1947 and bearing the obverse with the outmoded titles. To differentiate this issue from the regular strikings of 1947, a tiny maple leaf was placed after the date.
