Description

1870 Narrow Rim Canada 5-cents Good (G-4)

Before the coinage of 1870 was complete, new master tools for the Canada 5-cents piece were introduced with the result that two varieties were created for that year. The first has wide rims (including unusually long rim denticles) on the obverse and reverse, and the second has more conventional narrow rims.

Victoria Portrait Obverse 2:
Strand of Hair Detail: The starting point of the first strand is just above the temple, quickly forming a thick slanted curve to the braid.
Eye Detail: The upper eyelid is thin, but with greater definition. The lower lid is weak. Both lids meet at the corner of the eye.
Lips and Chin Detail: The upper lip is thin with an outward curve. The chin is smooth and rounded into the neck.
Dates: Portrait Obverse 2 is currently known on the 1870 Narrow Rim, 1871, 1872H, 1874H, 1875H, 1880H, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, and 1901 5-cents.
