Description

1947 Dot Canada 25-cents VG-F (VG-10)

The granting of independence to India posed a problem for the Royal Canadian Mint in the early part of 1948. The new obverse coinage tools with the Latin phrase "ET IND: IMP" omitted to indicate that the King was no longer the Emperor of India would not arrive for several months, yet there was a need for all denominations of coins. The mint satisfied the demand by striking coins dated 1947 bearing the obverse with the outmoded titles. To differentiate this issue from the regular strikings of 1947, a tiny maple leaf was placed after the date. On an unknown number of coins, the maple leaf became filled and had the appearance of a tiny dot, which would be more appropriately described as a die state rather than a distinct variety.
